An excited Jennifer Hudson broadcasted live from her home earlier today to premiere “Where You At,” the first single off her sophomore album I Remember Me (March 22). Poised at a piano with a Grammy sitting on top, J-Hud grooved as the song played, taking time after to field questions from fans and bounce her son David Otunga Jr. on her knee.
The ballad, written by R. Kelly and produced by Harvey Mason Jr., begins with a rolling drumbeat and an inspiring piano melody. The tune puts the songstress on the defense, admonishing a lover for ditching her when they were supposed to meet up. “Thought you were my hero/ But as it turns out you a no-show,” she wails, elongating the note before shifting into a dramatic key change.
The Oscar winner, who revealed collaborations with Alicia Keys (“I Need Love”) and Ne-Yo (“Why Is It So Hard”), shared her excitement about the new single. “This song to me is like what I always wanted to do vocally,” she explained. “As an aspiring writer, just the subject of it means so much to me. It’s simple and it’s something we say every day.”
Jennifer claims that the 12-track album, which will include a gospel song, will have something for everyone. “We got some good uptempos for you. It’s a bit of everything,” she said. “I think this album brings all of that to the table. I was allowed to be far more involved in the recording process and the song selection. And this time, I only recorded what I loved. If I didn’t like it, I was not putting my vocals on that song.”
