R&B megastar Trey Songz recently spoke with The Source about his anticipated fifth studio album, Chapter 5, citing the work will be “the best me you’ve ever heard.” The forthcoming LP, which will act as the follow-up to Songz’ 4th album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure, is still in the planning and recording phase.
What can we expect from your new album?
It’s titled Chapter 5, it’s going to be my fifth album, and it’s my sixth year in the game so I’ve been here for a while now. You can expect the best me you’ve ever heard. I don’t have any release dates in mind right now but I’m just making music and enjoying myself in the studio and having fun. When I get to a place where I feel comfortable saying a date or all of that, people will definitely know. I have a few dream collaborations on that album that I want, but they say if you blow out your candle and make a wish you can’t tell people what you ask for or it won’t come true.

Describe a little bit of your musical progression since you’ve been rapping a lot more on your records and freestyles.
Man, what I’ve found within myself and within music right now is that creativity is accepted. The internet kind of made the world flat, and it doesn’t take very long at all for a song to get around the world. Lil’ Wayne doesn’t get looked at crazy when he sings on a song. A couple of years ago Kanye drops 808s and Heartbreak which is a whole worldy album where he is singing and letting himself be felt and whatever creative expression he wants to give out. If it’s good, people will accept it. For me, I’ve never been a guy who’s accepted the boundaries placed upon me as an R&B singer or whatever I’m supposed to be. What I do find is that there are boundaries still to be broken down in radio. Where they don’t accept certain things from certain artists because of what people are expecting from you. But if you go directly to the fans, man they’ll appreciate what it is if it’s good music. For me, I’m just pushing my boundaries of myself as an artist whether it’s a quote-unquote Pop record, a soulful R&B record, a Hip-Hop record, or mixtape record, whatever it is I just want to live beyond the limits of what people expect of me.
