The uber talented Marques Toliver has released an official mixtape for his worldwide growing fan base. If you are unfamiliar, Marques is a Brooklyn bred, London based singer/violinist (See this Visual). Such a talent can surely not follow the commercial mixtape norms. In fact, Marques delivers quite the abstract piece with “Studying For My Ph.D.” See what The Guardian UK had to say as they premiered the project…
Over 14 tracks Toliver weaves delicate harmonies and softly plucked violin around interview snippets, including a defiant Eartha Kitt and an impassioned Darcus Howe. In fact, there are references to his current British home, with Travelers featuring a news report on the Dale Farm eviction. There’s an underlying sense of confusion throughout and this is most apparent in the aptly titled Chaos, which layers Roberta Flack’s I Am the Girl over samples of Beyoncé’s Baby Boy and a choir. For his mixtape, Marques Toliver has decided to reveal his inspirations rather than offer too much of himself via new songs, using the format to create something abstract yet compelling.
