What’s up all. We are still reeling from the effects of a truly emotional night of real authentic R&B presented by Atlantic Records and ‘Spotlight Live’ this past Monday night. For those that were in attendance we can nod our head in silent agreement, but for the many that were not able to attend Monday’s showcase in New York City, we must share and attest to the honestly special moment that took place for R&B fans.
While the night started out with a complete disaster at the door, which was never rightfully remedied (we can only offer our deepest apologizes to anyone that could not make it inside, due to uncontrollable circumstances), the evenings performances proved to be a shining light of hope on today’s R&B market. Atlantic Records sponsored the whole evening and touted their top tier of new singing talent for the industry, their own staff, and some lucky fans.
Newcomer Phoenix kicked off the night prior to 9pm and introduced the jam packed audience to her vocal ability and sex appeal. Receiving positive reaction all around, you can mark her name down as one of R&B’s rising singers. The nights first main act was buzz-worthy singer/songwriter Sevyn Streeter. The Florida native kicked up the energy in the room with her catchy debut single “I Like It,” and ran through covers of some records she wrote or co-wrote including “Fine China.” She treated the crowd to her cover of Aaliyah’s “Come Over,” and showed her sexy, seductive side with new single “It Won’t Stop.” Sevyn left the stage to a strong applause and many impressed fans.
As the DJ turnt up the crowd blasting hit after hit of mostly Hip-Hop, it was time for K. Michelle to make her grand entrance and bless another NYC stage. The building was packed with her fans and they responded as only such an authentic artist can command. K ran through her fan favorites such as “Kiss My Ass,” “Can’t Raise A Man,” “I Don’t Like Me,” new song “When I Get A Man” and her single “V.S.O.P..” Her set delivers the feeling of therapy for many, and her vocal prowess shined as sharp as ever live.
With the audience fully liquored up, and appropriately so, it was time for the headlining act, TGT to smash the stage. For those that are just getting familiar with the three man R&B group of Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank, it was a moment they will never forget. The fellas hit the stage as a solid unit, different than on their “3 Kings” Tour, and got the party all the way turnt up as they brought everyone back to the days of classic male groups such as Bell Biv Devoe and Jodeci. With the ladies and even most of the fellas on their feet singing to every work, each member ran through a quick solo set of their own classics, including “Sweet Lady” by Tyrese, “Maybe I Deserve” by Tank and “Pony” by Ginuwine. They closed their set with new single “Sex Never Felt Better,” and for the rest of the night all we could think about was R&B could never be better.
