August Alsina has been named one of MTV Jams ‘Fab 5’ (the years most exciting new artists), and in connection with the honor the New Orleans native premiered his new music video for “Downtown” featuring Kidd Kidd. The song, which was released on Alsina’s mixtape ‘The Product II,’ is a personal track that finds the 20-year-old singer reflecting on the loss of his brother who was gunned down in New Orleans back in 2010, a scene all to familiar for Kidd Kidd, who in June 2011 was shot 6 times, and has lived to rap about it.
“It’s a blessing to be selected as one of MTV Jams’ Fab 5, and to be the only singer means a lot. It shows that what me and my team are doing isn’t being boxed in. We’re reaching people in an authentic way,” said August. “I grew up on Jams. It’s where I was introduced to new videos and new artists. They always represented artists on the rise like myself. You never forget who supported you first.”
Alsina is prepping for the release of his debut EP ‘Downtown: Life Under the Gun’, which due to hit iTunes on August 20.
