One of R&B’s favorite men, John Legend, has supplied his musical talents to the soundtrack of the new film, ‘12 Years a Slave.’ Giving his rendition of the Negro Spiritual, “Roll Jordan, Roll,” Legend enlisted most of the cast to be apart of the track as well.
Overseeing the organization of the musical masterpiece to the film, he stated:
“12 Years a Slave is such a stunningly powerful film. I was so moved when I saw it. I felt every minute of it and was so inspired to contribute to the music of the soundtrack. This album brings together some incredible artists from different places and different genres who have all been touched by the film. When artists are inspired by great art, it makes us want to create. This album is the result of that inspiration.”
The soundtrack, “Music From and Inspired by 12 Years a Slave” can be purchased through iTunes on November 5 and in stores on November 19. The 16-track compilation includes songs from Legend, Hans Zimmer, Alicia Keys, and Alabama Shakes.
Based on life experiences of Solomon Northup, a free black man born in pre-civil war America in New York, the movie shows the trials and tribulations that he endured after he was tricked and sold into slavery for 12 years. The Steve McQueen directed film, ‘12 Years a Slave,’ is currently showing in select theaters.
