Surprising everyone when she transformed into the thicky thicky thick girl that we’re seeing nowadays, the singer wasn’t always as fit as she is now. Sure, she’s always had a small frame, but according to her, she had never been a runner. In 2011, that all changed though. Deciding to take part in the New York City Marathon to test her strength and will, the then 31-year-old also made the decision to be a vegetarian for a full year in order to prepare.
“The first half was easy. After the 14th or 15th mile, things started getting tough. It was mind over matter. Every mile and a half, I would stop and stretch. y whole body was in excruciating pain.”
The race, which she completed in just under seven hours, raised 200,000 for the North Shore Animal League.
Now, proud to call herself a runner, the famed singer has been a vegetarian for three years and says that it has changed her outlook for the better.
“There’s a stigma attached to vegetarian food. My friends would say, ‘Oh gosh, that’s no fun’…But I discovered so many great dishes that I eat habitually now, because they’re delicious.”
