If any younger viewers doubted it, or weren’t in the know, Mary J. Blige showed off why she’s still the Queen of Hip Hop Soul on Sunday night at the 2017 BET Award.
The R&B legend brought her emotional new album, Strength of a Woman to the stage with a medley performance that everyone should be talking about.
Kicking off her set with “Set Me Free,” Mary launched into the song that was likely written with her estranged husband Kendu Isaacs in mind. “There’s a special place in hell for you,” she sang. “You gon’ pay for what you did to me.”
But soon, the horns came out and her attitude shifted to self-love on “Love Yourself (Remix).” Joined by A$AP Rocky, a group of musicians, and Black Panther-inspired men, Mary explained the importance of loving oneself through turmoil.
