Hotly-tipped R&B singer Jorja Smith joins the ranks of Adele, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding, with her recent win of the Brit Awards 2018 Critics’ Choice Award.
To celebrate the recognition, the songstress recorded a special in-studio session performance. Joined by her band at the infamous Abby Road studios in London, the 20-year-old vocalist performed a live mellow rendition of her latest single “Teenage Fantasy.” A song she originally penned at 16-years-old over her first romantic breakup.
Upon winning the Critics’ Choice Award, Smith said: “It’s been an unforgettable 2017 during which I’ve fulfilled so many of my dreams and this is such a special way to end the year.”
Brits chairman and CEO of Sony Music U.K. and Ireland Jason Iley said in a statement: “The Critics’ Choice Award has an incredible track record of showcasing some of the most exciting up-and-coming artists for the last ten years. Jorja Smith has a huge future ahead of her and looks set to follow in the footsteps of the most successful past Critics’ Choice winners.”
“I will do my best to make it another memorable year,” promised Jorja, who cites Amy Winehouse among her main influences and was working in Starbucks when she uploaded her soulful debut single “Blue Lights” onto SoundCloud two years ago.
The 38th Brit Awards take place at London’s O2 Arena on 21 February 2018. Check out the performance below.
