Kali Uchis transports us to a trippy world in the whimsical music video for her funky new single “After the Storm” featuring Tyler, the Creator and Bootsy Collins.
Directed by Nadia Lee Cohen, the colorful visual opens with Kali eating a bowl of Bootsy’s cereal “Funky Flavor Flakes,” while she writes out a grocery list which includes eggs, milk, bread and a lover.
From there, Kali takes a trip to the store where Bootsy appears on more silly products, while she sings, “If you need a hero, just look in the mirror / No one’s gonna save you now / So you better save yourself.”
Back home she soaks up the sun in her yard with birds playing in her hair. After planting Tyler, the Creator seeds, the Flower Boy blooms from the grass, overcoming different seasons, and growing over time. “The Tito to my Randy,” he raps. “Now, let’s produce some thriller / My chocolate with your vanilla.”
Eventually, he becomes a Chia Pet-like person in a flower suit and the two have Chia Pet-like babies.
The song is all about overcoming obstacles, exemplified by weather metaphors. “We can find solace in the fact that we have to go through the bad stuff to truly get to the good,” said Kali. “Just because you’re losing at the moment doesn’t mean you’ve lost yet. The storm may be scary now but it’s how your flowers bloom later, and paradise is just beyond the rainbow.”
