Over recent years, R&B artists have steered away from only releasing music on certain days of the week. Since there’s always something new coming out, we know it’s sometimes difficult to stay updated on all things R&B — even on your days off over the weekend.
Although we’re always here to give you day-by-day updates, we figured giving you a recap of some of the best new R&B tracks, videos, and moments from weekend’s past (and sometimes a little before) at the beginning of the week is a great way for you to hear all the good stuff in one place. And with some of the top R&B artists releasing new songs, announcing plans for upcoming albums and tours, 2020 is really off to an amazing start for our beloved genre.
So, if you happened to miss out on what’s been going down on the R&B front, here’s a short list of what you may have missed.
Jennifer Hudson pays tribute to Kobe Bryant with a beautiful rendition of “For All We Know.”
Jennifer Hudson is one singer who doesn’t fail to channel the right emotions through her live performances, which is probably why she has performed many tributes in recent years. Adding another to her applaudable list, the veteran songstress opened the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday with an emotional performance in honor of Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant. Her rendition of “For All We Know” by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway evoked strong emotions from the audience.
Kehlani releases video for “All For Me/Change Your Life.”
Kehlani dropped a double music video last week. The visuals for the first part featured clips of the singer dancing in a scuffle-fi subway vehicle and flexing in an abandoned warehouse. For her new single “Change Your Life,” the video, which is set in Oakland, featured the singer riding around town with friends. Fans of R&B songstress Keyshia Cole weren’t too happy about the release, however, as the video for “All For Me” didn’t feature their fave.”
Snoh Aalegra taps Pharrell for the remix to “Whoa.”
Meanwhile, Snow Aalegra released a new version of her song, “Whoa” featuring Pharrell Williams. The original version of the R&B tune appeared on her last studio album ugh, those feels again. In the remix — which boasts a new beat — hears Pharrell to add a spice in the song with his unforgettable verse.
R&B singer Mashonda releases “King” after a lengthy hiatus from music.
Mashonada’s new single comes following many years away from the music scene and is the first song from her upcoming EP. Her sultry vocals on “King” will have most listeners reminiscing about her old music and smooth vocals.
Finally, Sy Smith drops the video for “Camelot.”
Soulful singer Sy Smith has finally released the music video for her highly praised single, “Camelot.” Shot in Tanzania, the video for the sensual tune was directed by Shaw Carter Peterson and capture the beauty of the country as well as match the vibe set with the song.
And lastly, Alex Isley and Jack Dine team up for a new single titled “Gone.”
L.A. singer, Alex Isley has released a new song with frequent collaborator, Jack Dine. Last year, she collaborated with the producer to drop an EP titled Wilton. Based on that project, it is evident that both creators have a chemistry when they come together to create music, which is why their latest collaboration isn’t a surprise. The strength of this single lies in its hook and sweet harmonies.
