It’s not hard to vibe out to the unique sound of Philadelphia-based artist Chess. The rapper, singer hybrid showcases his talent in his latest single “All I Really Want,” a catchy tune about people looking forward to the simpler things in life. The current pandemic makes that message even more relevant.
Chess is a multi-talented musician, who credits his hometown for his creative style. His single pays respects to Philly songwriting legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who wrote the 70s hit “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. In “All I Really Want,” Mr. Chess sings “if you don’t know me by now, then what’s your worry babe?”
Although his artistry focuses on rap, he puts his vocals on display for the first half of the track, also singing: “The usual just ain’t usual no more,” a relatable line as we all start to return to life post lock down.
