Roy Ayers was a brilliant composer, vocalist, songwriter, musician, and a trailblazing vibraphonist. Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he played a pivotal role in shaping both R&B and jazz music.
Ayers’ passion for music was ignited early in life, undoubtedly influenced by his parents—his father, a trombonist, and his mother, a piano teacher. In the 1960s, he earned a spot working alongside jazz legend Herbie Mann, and by the end of the decade, Ayers embarked on his own musical journey, founding the iconic band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity. The 1970s saw Ayers and his group dominate the scene, with the 1976 album Everybody Loves The Sunshine becoming a smash hit. Other chart-toppers like “Running Away” and “Searching” solidified his place in music history.
Ayers’ sound transcended genres and continued to resonate deeply with hip-hop and house music communities. His legacy found a special home with the neo-soul movement of the 1990s, where he was affectionately dubbed the “Godfather of Neo-Soul.” His music was heavily sampled by the movement and can be heard in the works of iconic artists such as The Roots, Alicia Keys, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Tyler, The Creator, Mos Def, and many more artists sampling his music, further cemented his timeless influence.
With a musical journey that lasted more than sixty years, Ayers released his debut album West Coast Vibes in 1963 and signed to Atlantic in 1967 and Polydor in 1970. Ayers left an indelible mark on the music world.
