Throwback Thursday: Rick James – “Mary Jane”

By

Yup, this is how we’re feeling right now! This morning we had to take it back to 1978 with Rick James‘ massive hit “Mary Jane.”

The classic song was released as the second single from James’ debut album Come Get It, and peaked in the top five of the R&B charts. The song is also noted for the keyboards, strings, background vocals, arrangement, flute, and other live instrumentation work. Who else could we count on to personify Marijuana? And even make non-smokers love the hit? LOL.

“Mary Jane” has also been covered and sampled by numerous artists.  It was sampled in the smash hit “I’m Real (Murder Remix)” by Jennifer Lopez feat. Ja Rule, “Jane” by EPMD, “Smoke Buddah” by Redman, “Rollin’ the Dice” by Master P. Coolio also sampled the song to create a hip-hop version called “[I’m In Love With] Mary Jane” for the soundtrack to the film Half-Baked. It was also sampled by Mary J Blige, Pretty Ricky, and many others.

Get up and get FUNKY this morning!
