Throwback Thursday: Kelly Price feat. Ronald Isley & R. Kelly – “Friend of Mine (Remix)”

By

Kelly Price is a seven-time Grammy-nominated R&B singer–songwriter. “Friend of Mine” was a Grammy-nominated No. 1 R&B song from her platinum 1998 album Soul of A Woman. The original version of the single spent five weeks at the top of the U.S. R&B chart and helped Kelly win the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist.

The official remix featured R. Kelly and Ronald Isley. This version became a pop hit in 1998, peaking at No. 12 on the U.S. Pop chart. The song and music video are memorable for opening up with Ronald Isley (Mr. Biggs) returning a call to his goddaughter (Kelly) who left him a message earlier that day at work. He asks her to tell him what happened, and Kelly reveals that her best friend has been sleeping with her husband (portrayed by R. Kelly). Ronald Isley (Mr. Biggs) then tells Kelly to call up her ex (R. Kelly) so he can talk to him. The dramatic moment makes for another classic R. Kelly and Mr. Biggs musical dialogue, found earlier in Kellz “Down Low” and later in The Isley Brother’s “Contagious.”
