Throwback Thursday: The Isley Brothers – ‘Between The Sheets’

By

The Isley Brothers are an iconic R&B group originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. The group has been cited as having enjoyed one of the longest, most influential, and most diverse careers in popular music. “”Between the Sheets” is a quiet storm funk hit song released on their 1983 album of the same name. Like many of the group’s releases, songwriting credit was shared with all six band mates (though only Marvin and Ernie wrote the song), “Between the Sheets” was recorded in November 1982 and was released in early February 1983 hitting the charts two months later. The song made a huge impression on the Isleys’ long legion of R&B fans who took the song to No. 3 on the Billboard Top R&B Singles chart while it peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart. The song’s R&B success helped their Between the Sheets album go platinum.

The song would be heavily sampled in the years to come by hip-hop artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., Common, Jay Z, Drake, UGK and more. Artists outside the hip-hop genre have also sampled the song including Gwen Stefani, who sampled it for her single, “Luxurious,” while Whitney Houston used part of the lyrics on her 2002 single, “One of Those Days.”
