Toronto singer/songwriter JAHKOY has released his Def Jam debut EP, Foreign Water.
Led by the ScHoolboy Q-assisted “California Heaven,” the 7-track project shows the rising artist’s diverse influences from his upbringing and the surroundings of his hometown. While Toronto has become more synonymous with dark, seductive sounds, JAHKOY teams up with producers such as Rico Love, Yung Berg, and Boi1da to blend a bit of that with livelier, upbeat vibes.
“This is me delivering the Toronto experience, without [people] having to go there,” JAHKOY recently told The FADER. “The foreignness of everything [in me] is what inspired it: coming from Canada, being from the Caribbean, and getting everybody involved in the spirit of the city like people do with other cities.”
On “No Regrets” he stresses the importance of always keeping love in the equation. “Everybody’s singing about war / Nobody wants to sing about love / It’s something worth fighting for / So who’s gonna sing about us / Sing about love, love, love, love,” he coos on the feel-good chorus.
