Nigerian-American sisters Ivana and Jessica Nwokike aka VanJess know a thing or two about relationships falling apart. They can suck, but they can also make for hauntingly beautiful music. Case in point? “Favor,” the duo’s latest single.
Producer Darehouse is on the beat for “Favor,” relying on the warbling strums of a bass guitar and a low tempo instrumental to carry the record forward. That allows the voices of VanJess to take center stage as the two outline their lovers’ disappointments and their need to move on for their better.
The soulful record even allows for a creative rap break of sorts at its midpoint, on which the duo muses, “This year I made a resolution, I wouldn’t waste my time on having no solution.” Perhaps it’s the right way to break up: by telling your lover the last good thing they can do for you, is let you go.
Take a listen to VanJess’s “Favor” below. The duo has a presently-untitled project due out later this fall.
