Mary J. Blige pulls double duty delivering a brand new original song with her new movie ‘Mudbound.’
The period drama features Blige portraying the mother of a soldier in the post WWII south. The film is about friendship, unacknowledged heritage and the unending struggle for and against the land. Mary delved deep into her emotional role on screen and for her musical contribution she teamed up with fellow R&B legend Raphael Saadiq and writer Taura Stinson for the powerful “Mighty River.”
Over the piano-laden track, Mary calls out struggle and pain that life gives, while preaching for our differences to be washed away.
Life is a teacher / Time is a healer / And I’m a believer, like a river wild,” she sings. “Ego is a killer / Greed is a monster / But love is stronger / Stronger than them all.”
Mudbound is out now on Netflix, and the soundtrack is available on digital music platforms. Take a listen to “Mighty River” below.
