Less than a week after releasing the sexually-liberating “Pynk,” Wondaland wonder woman Janelle Monáe surprises with the empowering new song “I Like That.”
The playful track contains minor homages to classic doo-wop, but still feels completely fresh and smooth. Janelle addresses her personality and the duality of her varied feelings.
“I’m crazy, and I’m sexy, and I’m cool,” she sings. “Little rough around the edges but I keep it smooth / I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong / I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs, and I like that.”
Monáe also drops some flows. “I remember when you called me weird,” she rhymes. “We was in math class, third row, I was sitting by you / Right before Mr. Amond’s class, ’cause my mom couldn’t afford new Js, Polos, thrift store, thrift clothes, that was all I knew.”
“I Like That” is the latest release from Janelle’s upcoming third album and “emotion picture,” Dirty Computer, due April 27. The project has also spawned the songs “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane.”
