One night after H.E.R. crushed the stage, Ella Mai went on a “Trip” on “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday (Oct. 10).
The performance opened with the 23-year-old R&B singer in the spotlight, and the rest of the band illuminated by purple lights behind her. Fog swam around her feet as she sang, “I put my feelings on safety / So I don’t go shootin’ where your heart be.”
The rhythm heated up on the chorus, the drumbeat leading Mai, dressed all in white, into lines, “I’m done tripping / That’s how I control this feeling, you keep giving / You keep on hittin’ it.” Mai soared over the band, her smooth vocals riding the velvety groove as she proved once again that she’s got skills well beyond her years.
Ella Mai’s self-titled debut album releases this Friday (Oct. 12).
