Early Thursday morning, Mary J. Blige‘s father was hospitalized in critical condition after a stabbing incident in his apartment outside of Detroit. According to reports, Thomas Blige, 63, was stabbed in the neck during a domestic dispute with his former girlfriend Cheryl Ann White, 50.

Police found Mr. Blige in his apartment complex at 6:58 a.m. Thursday morning with three stage wounds, one of which was in his neck. He was then taken in for surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich.

According to USA Today, Detective Sgt. Jim Martens said not only did officers find blood in the snow near the entrance drive to the apartment complex, but also found the ex-girlfriend in her apartment nearby, splattered with blood. After being briefly treated for a cut, the woman was taken into custody at Calhoun County jail on a charge of assault with intent to murder.

Martens said police believe Blige saw the woman deflating the tires on his Ford SUV in the parking lot outside the apartment and went out to confront her. The couple argued and Blige was stabbed.

Martens said police have handled seven domestic violence complaints between Blige and his 50-year-old former girlfriend since August.

The woman was charged in October with aggravated domestic violence after she hit Blige in the head with a glass candlestick. She entered a no-contest plea to the charge and on Jan. 10 was placed on six months probation. She was ordered to have “non-assaultive” contact with Blige.

While the hospital hasn’t revealed an update on his condition, we’ll keep Mary J. Blige in our prayers and hope for her father’s speedy recovery.
