R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl was formed in 1999, as the brainchild of former Tony! Toni! Toné! member and genius Raphael Saadiq, A Tribe Called Quest DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and D’Angelo originally. However, D’Angelo backed out of the group due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by En Vogue’s Dawn Robinson.
“Dance Tonight” was the first single from their debut eponymous album. The single reached number 36 on the Hot 100 chart. This was also used as a single from the Love & Basketball soundtrack. The music video shows the group getting ready for a party that is being held later that night, and is interspersed with clips from the Love & Basketball movie.
Lucy Pearl was a melange of soul, funk, hip-hop, R&B and rock with super sexy vocals and heavy beats. It was Saadiq’s genius vision, songwriting and musicianship with Muhammad’s beats and Robinson’s lush vocals that made the group phenomenal in its own right. Enjoy the video above!
