This might be great news for many die-hard fans of The Weeknd‘s breakout sound.
While 2015 brought the best year of his career with the mega success of his Grammy-winning album Beauty Behind the Madness, Abel is back in the lab reportedly working with the original team who helped craft House of Balloons.
In a new Vogue profile, the XO singer reveals that he has ceased touring and any other show obligations because there is ‘magic’ happening in the studio right now. Apparently he has reunited with Canadian producers Doc McKinney, Zodiac, and Illangelo. Together they are currently working on a new project, something different. “It’s a new thing,” he says. “Always a new thing.”
Without sharing any further details about the upcoming music The Weeknd did say, “But whatever it is, music is being made.”
The applauded mixtape House of Balloons helped introduce his unique sound in early 2011, he recently celebrated the projects 5-year anniversary. “Nothing sounded like what we were doing, because R&B was hard to listen to back then,” he explains. “The genre was dying.”
Taylor Swift agrees. “He was like nothing else out there,” she tells Vogue. “Right now, the radio is peppered with hints of production elements and vocal stylings that were very likely inspired by The Weeknd. In our industry, that’s the surest sign you’re doing something right.”
Naomi Campbell also showers the Toronto crooner with praise in the article. “What I love is that he kept himself hidden for so long, not showing his face,” she says. “The music speaks for itself.”
