Mary J. Blige wasn’t the only R&B vocalist to tear down the Oscar’s stage on Sunday night. As previously announced, Andra Day was joined by Academy Award winner Common to perform their soulful original song “Stand Up For Something” from Marshall.
After a new a cappella freestyle from the Chi-town rapper, which mentioned recent events and shouted out places like Africa, Haiti and Puerto Rico–in reference to recent comments made by President Trump–a single stage light shined over Day as she began the Diane Warren-penned ballad.
The captivated audience watched as she soared through the empowering anthem with her powerful pipes. Midway through the performance a group of diverse people appeared in the background each illuminated by their own single light.
“You can’t just talk the talk / You’ve got to walk that walk,” sings Day. “Stand Up for Something” was nominated for Best Original Song, but the award went to “Remember Me” from Coco, which was released as a single from the film being performed by Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade.
