Andra-Day-Acrimony

New Music: Andra Day – I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free

By

Andra Day‘s musical gifts have such a special trait that they have afforded her the privileged of elevating our senses so much that they fit perfectly in cinematic works. Her vocals are like the smoothest liquor that can spread into any space and fill it up. Last year, she received the highest accolades for her contribution to the film Marshall, and now she continues to bless another soundtrack.

The latest movie to enlist Day’s powerful pipes is Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, starring Taraji P. Henson. Released in theaters last Friday, the film’s plot centers around the plight of a scorned woman. The official soundtrack includes many of Nina Simone’s most popular songs, along with the brand new original, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” sung by Andra Day.

A theatrical string section (think James Bond) lay the soundscape for Andra to seduce while opening up about the vulnerable subject matter. “I wish I could say all the things that I should say,” she sings. “Say ’em loud, say ’em clear / For the whole wide world to hear.”

The track comes in just under 3 minutes, but don’t miss Day’s haunting high note at the end. Take a listen below.
