The family-approved Whitney Houston documentary is due out this summer, and now we have our first look with the official trailer. The Roadside Attractions and Miramax documentary, simply titled Whitney, is said to be an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston’s life.
“There’s the magic, there’s the voice, there’s the legend,” reads the trailer’s tagline. “You don’t know her story until you hear the truth.”
Using never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive demos, rare performances, and original interviews with the people who knew her best, including Bobby Brown, Clive Davis, and Kevin Costner, the documentary unravels the mystery behind “The Voice,” who thrilled millions even as she struggled to make peace with her own troubled past.
“People think it’s so damn easy,” Whitney says at one point in the clip. “And it’s not.”
This is the only Houston film with approval from the singer’s estate. It is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, who recently spoke on his process. “I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story,” he said. “Why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully?”
He went on to say that the movie will provide a different perspective on Whitney, who died in 2012 at the age of 48. “At its heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew,” he explained.
Whitney is schedule to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before hitting theaters July 6.
