While in New Orleans for her maiden performance at ESSENCE Fest 2018, H.E.R. sat down for an interview with the Recording Academy.
The breakout new R&B star spoke about her first time performing at the annual festival, keeping her identity a mystery, the value of musicianship and more.
“I think people don’t think playing instruments is as cool as it used to be,” she says. “I’m representing that, instruments ARE cool. I think a lot of young black women are afraid, or won’t pick up a bass guitar or a lead guitar or even play the drums. There’s little pockets of us but I really want more people to get into instruments.”
