REVIEW: “Some Like It Hot” Sets the Forrest Theatre on Fire with Style, Heart, and Hilarious Charm

By

Currently lighting up the stage at the Forrest Theatre through June 1, this touring production presented by Ensemble Arts Philly brings all the razzle-dazzle of 1930s Hollywood glamour with the heart and humor to match. It’s smart, snappy, and absolutely sensational from the first note to the final bow.

The show takes us back to the jazz-soaked days of Prohibition, where two musicians on the run disguise themselves as women to escape the mob — and chaos, comedy, and unexpected transformation follow. But beyond the wild plot and classic slapstick, this production carries a timely and heartfelt message about identity, acceptance, and the courage to be yourself.

Standout performances abound, but we have to shout out Travis Kordell, who delivers a show-stopping turn as Jerry/Daphne. With impeccable timing, charisma, and emotional depth, Kordell brought both belly laughs and real tenderness to the role. It’s a star-making performance — and North Carolina should be proud.

Ashley Marie Arnold is another major highlight as Ginger. Her stage presence is magnetic, her comedic beats are sharp, and every moment she’s onstage, the energy lifts. Arnold brings warmth, wit, and a voice that fills the theatre — a true scene-stealer.

The rest of the cast doesn’t miss a beat. Matt Loehr is smooth and charming as Joe/Josephine, Leandra Ellis-Gaston stuns as the dazzling Sugar, and Edward Juvier earns plenty of laughs as the affably eccentric Osgood. Rounding out the cast, Tarra Conner Jones (Sweet Sue), Jamie LaVerdiere (Mulligan), Devon Goffman (Spats), and Devon Hadsell (Minnie) bring depth and sparkle to every ensemble moment.

Visually, the show is a knockout. From Gregg Barnes’ lush costumes to Scott Pask’s art deco sets, every detail pulls you into the jazz age. The lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound by Brian Ronan elevate the immersive experience, while Casey Nicholaw’s direction and choreography (he of The Book of Mormon and Aladdin fame) keeps everything moving with Broadway-caliber precision and flair.

Of course, none of this magic would land without the brilliant book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, and the joyously bold score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, which brings vintage swing into fresh, melodic territory.

So here’s the bottom line: Some Like It Hot is an absolute must-see. Whether you’re a musical theatre devotee or someone just looking for a feel-good, laugh-out-loud, tap-your-toes kind of night — this is your show. The production nails the heart of the original 1959 film while making it feel fresh, inclusive, and full of soul.

Don’t miss your chance to catch this smash-hit musical before it leaves Philly. Some Like It Hot runs at the Forrest Theatre through June 1 — and yes, tickets are still available.

Get ready for big laughs, big voices, and big-hearted storytelling. This one’s hot — and totally unforgettable.
