This trailblazing take on The Wizard of Oz forever changed the landscape of Broadway with its unforgettable fusion of soul, gospel, rock, and ’70s funk—and its powerful story of Dorothy’s journey to discover where she truly belongs in today’s world. Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz transformed one of America’s most iconic tales into a dazzling, all-Black musical celebration of identity, community, and home.
With visionary direction by Schele Williams (The Notebook, Disney’s Aida revival), high-energy choreography by JaQuel Knight (Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” Black Is King), and fresh new material from Emmy- and Tony-nominated writer Amber Ruffin (The Amber Ruffin Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers), this revival is bursting with style, soul, and spirit.
The Wiz premiered on Broadway in 1978 and was an instant smash hit. In 1978 a film adaptation was released and featured an all-star cast including Icon and Legend Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, and the King of Pop Legend Michael Jackson.
