R&B’s latest evolution, whether you love it or hate it, has brought new attention to the genre, and consistently delivered unique artists with sounds and songs that are still rooted in real, raw emotion. Production often stands out on an equal or higher plane now, than the voice or artists themselves. Giving many talented creators the ability to connect with listeners through an overall sound message.
Though the label might not be necessary, the latest Alt-R&B artist to catch attention from the underground community, is NYC based BOY/FRIEND (yea, pronounced boy slash friend). Not the greatest name, and one we will have to wait for a description on it’s inspiration. Needless to say, the singer/songwriter has garnered buzz for his recently released stellar debut, the aptly titled, ‘Leather Weather‘ EP.
The debut album is a new class of R&B influenced by classic Pop and progressive Juke, all brought together by 90s songwriting sensibilities. With his smooth savoir faire, BOY/FRIEND tells the story of his constant cycle of break-ups to make-ups and everything in between in New York City.
