Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and Janelle Monáe joined President Obama and the First Family for the lighting of the U.S. national Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. on Friday.

The Queen of Soul performed “Joy to the World” while being shielded by an umbrella, and Mariah capped off the event with her classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Janelle Monáe entertained the festive crowd and cozied up to Santa Claus on the red carpet.

In addition to celebrating the season, Obama took a moment to remember Nelson Mandela. “This year, we give a special measure of gratitude for Nelson Mandela, a man who championed … generosity of spirit,” he said. “In his life, he blessed us with tremendous grace and unbelievable courage. And we are all privileged to live in a world touched by his goodness.”

The First Family greeted the performers and Mariah introduced her daughter Monroe to the president.

“What an honor to kick off the holiday season with the First Family,” said MC.
