Tinashe returned this past week with the brand new single “No Drama” featuring Offset. The record has received a varied mix of responses from fans, but as the lyrics go, the multihyphenated star isn’t here for the drama, she just wants to make her music and have fun.
“People are always kind of trying, I feel like, to fit me into a particular box,” she tells Genius, explaining that her music doesn’t need to be classified as just pop or R&B. “Say like, ‘Oh, you’re this or you’re that or we can put a label on you.’ I genuinely feel like I don’t fit into any of these boxes and I’m just legitimately always trying to be myself.”
“No Drama” also references a classic Mean Girls line, to highlight a “feeling yourself” confidence she encourages her fans to have: “Yelling you can’t sit with us, throwing up middle fingers.”
Tinashe recently sat down with Genius for the latest episode of their ‘Verified’ series and broke down the track. Watch her go line-for-line with “No Drama” in the video below.
